(My dad)
My journey into journalism feels almost predestined.
My dad was a journalist, and my brother continues that legacy today, so it’s safe to say that journalism runs through my veins.
As a Washington, D.C. area native and child of Ethiopian immigrants, I grew up with a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling and the diverse perspectives it brings. This background shapes my reporting, driving me to highlight stories that reflect cultural richness and global connections.
I’ve been at the Associated Press since June 2022, first as a video newsgathering intern and now, since January 2023, as a producer on AP’s first-ever social video team. I am one of four producers that covers the world’s biggest stories — ranging from politics to lifestyle and everything in between — for AP’s digital audience on platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. In other words, my job is to creatively and effectively tell a story using AP-shot video in 60 seconds or less. I also occasionally pitch, shoot and produce character-driven stories, including this piece on a 16-year-old international adoptee that became a Texas university’s youngest-ever graduate (which garnered over 275,000 views on Instagram).
I graduated from Northwestern University with a Master's in Journalism in 2022 and from George Washington University with a Bachelor's in Journalism and Mass Communication and a minor in Sociology in 2020.
